The best place to start is in its largest city, Billings. With a dream mix of big-city lights, nightlife that lasts until the sun comes up, and myriad outdoor activities during the day, Billings is the place to go.

First of all, it’s home to the Yellowstone Art Museum where you can take in a little culture with its varied collection of paintings and sculptures. These fine works of art contrast with the graffiti and other markings on the walls, which were preserved from the time of the museum’s previous incarnation as the county prison. In fact, the walls are an exhibit all their own.

Just outside the city limits is Pictograph State Park. Highlighting Native American rock art, it’s an unusual place to visit and surely one you’ll not forget easily. Allow yourself to be swept back into the past and see what prehistoric men saw around 4,500 years ago! After viewing this otherworldly art exhibit, you can take a walk around the 23-acre park and have yourself a wonderful picnic at any of the designated picnic areas.

Also just outside the outskirts of the city is Pompeys Pillar National Monument. While the rock itself is of an interestingly unusual formation, there are other sights to discover as well – Native American rock carvings, and an inscription carved by the explorer William Clark himself, the only thing that shows that the Expedition led by Lewis and Clark passed here.

A more man-made scene can be had at Moss Mansion, a historic home that’s been featured in many movies and television shows. Previously a home to the Moss family, it only became a museum after the last living member died in 1984. Designed by Harry Hardenberg, who also designed the Waldorf Astoria, among other prominent buildings, this almost intact home lets you have a glimpse of what life was like in the early 1900′s.

Billings is an interesting place, a charming mix of nature, history, and culture. No vacation city could give you more.
