Interview with Michael Hodson from

Tell us about yourself
In 2008, on my birthday, I took off with a goal to circle the world without leaving the ground (or water). 16 months later I succeeded and decided to keep traveling. I’m currenty back in Austin working on my company Only in VR.

You have an unlimited travel budget for 24 hours. Give me your itinerary.
Only 24 hours?! I’m assuming since my travel budget is unlimited that I can bypass messing around with security lines and layovers… private jet, please! I’d take off to South Africa for sure. I totally fell in love with Cape Town. I don’t agree with traveling too fast so with only 24 hours, I’d get my ass to Cape Town and hang out there. Soak in every minute.

You have won the lottery. Tell me where you want to live.
New Zealand.

Your favorite travel resource on the web?
…. Just kidding. Although, I do like looking at what honest travel bloggers have to say. Google flights and Google hotel search always seem to be a no-fuss way to get some information as well.

What is the superpower you most want?
Stop time. I could stop time and get a ton of work done so that I have more time to vacation and travel. I don’t want to cut corners or get someone else to do the work for me. I have pride in my VR company and I want to work hard… but I also want a break!

What’s fuels your passion for travel?
I love going somewhere new and seeing that we’re so similar. The little person in a big world feeling is incredible.

Why do you write?
When I first started writing, I was really new to it and simply wanted to document my travels and maybe make a little bit of money along the way. It quickly become a way to get my thoughts out of my head and surprisingly, people were interested in reading them!

Do your family and friends support your traveling escapades?
Yep. I think at this point they kind of have to.

What is the title of the movie about your life?
Trains, cars, and fine cigars.

What’s on your bucket list?
I’d love to do a train trip across Canada.

Can you imagine life without travel?
Lol. No. Lately, I haven’t been traveling as much but I can’t imagine how my life would be if I had never travelled.

If you were not travelling what would you be doing instead?
Only in VR.

If you could be transported to one place at one time, what would it be and why?
I’d go back to my birthday in 2008 when I started my journey. I’d love to get into my mind back then and take a look at how different I was then compared to who I am now.

Single thing you miss most from high school?

Do you have any advice or tips for aspiring travellers?
PLAN! Don’t just pack a bag and leave. Don’t just quit your job and go. Don’t just sell all your worldly possessions and assume that everyone on Instagram is going to love you for it. Make a solid financial plan.

Your single most treasured personal possession.

Language you’d most like to be fluent in?

Funniest person you have ever met or seen in person
Bill Murray!

Can you tell us about your next adventure
Currently pretty tied up with work but I’m looking into a beachy vacation in late winter – early spring. It won’t be anything daring and adventurous. I need a real vacation.
